Self-Employment and Labor Turnover in LDCs: Cross Country Evidence*
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper uses cross-country data from Latin America and the OECD to test the predictions of a simple efficiency wage model (Krebs and Maloney 1998) about the share of employment in self-employment and the rate of labor turnover. It finds support for the model and finds numerous demographic, economic and labor market institutions to be important to determining both self-employment and turnover. After adjusting for these factors, Latin American labor markets appear neither especially rigid nor distorted although individual countries stand out as important exceptions.

This article argues that neither the share of the workforce in self-employment nor the labor turnover rate are useful measures of labor market distortion or rigidity unless adjusted for country-specific economic and demographic variables. متن کاملQuitting and Labor Turnover: Microeconomic Evidence and Macroeconomic Consequences*
This paper presents an integrated approach to wage and employment determination combining microeconomic evidence with macroeconomic theory. We then use microeconomic data to estimate this quit-rate function and to test the specification...
متن کاملMeasuring the Effects of Employment Protection on Job Flows: Evidence from Seasonal Cycles
Theory implies that employment protection will unambiguously decrease job flows. However, cross-country comparisons of annual rates of job reallocation seem to show that employment protection has no discernible effect on job flows. This paper presents a model that shows that employment protection does not significantly alter a firm’s response to highly persistent shocks – such as those present ...
